The 4100 Carbon XL is the Nymphing Crossover You Need
(The Carbon XL 4100 also excels in all disciplines of euro nymphing)
Whether guiding or fishing personally, nymphing is something you need to do in the wildly fluctuating conditions of the South West. My guiding and fishing focus is primarily on the San Juan and Chama rivers, where nymphing-both euro and suspension rigs-are the primary tactics. While the San Juan has tremendous dry fly fishing opportunities, the technical aspects of presenting tiny dries on long leaders can be difficult for new or first time anglers. Floating or wading, nymphing provides consistency and the 4100 Carbon XL has become a guide staple this past season.
Simply put, it is a nymphing machine. The Carbon XL has become my go-to boat rod when guiding on the Juan. The 10ft length makes indicator fishing a breeze and new clients immediately fall in love with its line control. I’ve also found with a 10ft rod, we pick up more line on hook sets and more fish find their way into the net. The Carbon XL is soft enough to protect 6x with plenty of reserve power to turn over those bigger San Juan trout.
The Carbon XL in its 10ft 4wt configuration also makes indicator fishing from the bank a dream. It not only roll casts like a champion but you’ll also equally appreciate the mending abilities, especially from the bank. Recently I’ve been using the rod for its intended purpose, euro nymphing. From up and across, dry dropper, and grease sighter techniques, you will find a friend. My clients and I have been very impressed with its responsiveness, “castability” , and back bone. The Carbon XL is also untouchable at its price point of $169.95. If you’re euro curious this season, looking for a great boat or bank rod, or just adding an extra to the quiver, the 4100 Carbon XL won’t let you down.
