Justin Warner is most known as a judge, host, competitor, and commentator on Food Network, but since moving to the Black Hills of South Dakota, he has been a fly fishing junkie. When he was younger he worked in Japanese restaurants, where he was able to turn his ichthyological curiosity in to cold, hard tips. As a chef, he is always motivated by the next destination, the new ingredient, or having the right tool for the job. It wasn’t until he drunkenly bought a fly rod that he realized he could turn his skills to a new and rewarding hobby–fishing for trout in the cool streams of the Black Hills. As an angler, Justin is always learning, researching, observing, and sometimes stupidly–experimenting. His knack for satisfying picky customers translates nicely to the skittery trout found in tiny streams above local reservoirs. With his world-class musician friend, Alex Massa, Justin created the fishing collective known as “fishass”– a group of two dedicated to being seriously not serious about all things angling. After reading a book by Dave Whitlock, Justin now prefers to make fake food for fish instead of reality TV food for people.
