Justin Spence is a co-owner and senior guide at Big Sky Anglers. Growing up on the banks of the Clearwater River, in Orofino, ID, Justin was a fisherman from very early on. As a child, he lived for a time in Guatemala with his family, where he learned Spanish, and a few other things as well. After playing soccer for and graduating from the University of New Mexico, Justin pursued his dream of guiding in Montana. Justin has been employed in the fly fishing industry since 1997, when he cut his teeth behind the counter at Charlie’s Sporting Goods in Albuquerque, NM. In 2000 he made connections in the local scene through his angling mentor Dick Blumershine, and began working as a guide and employee of a local fly shop here in West Yellowstone. In 2005 he went out on his own, running fishing trips in both Montana and Argentina, and a year later opened the West Yellowstone Fly Shop. After 10 years of great times, great people, and personal and professional growth, Justin took the next big step. In 2016, he merged with Joe Moore and Jonathan Heames under the flag of Big Sky Anglers.
Justin is always on the move, following the fishing season on both sides of the equator, spending his summers operating the Big Sky Anglers fly shop in Montana and his winters guiding and hosting fishing trips throughout Argentina. Justin is an exceptional angler and phenomenal fly caster, but what makes him such a special individual is his positive spirit and welcoming personality. He possesses a true gift and an incredible passion for teaching others about the sport of fly-fishing, earning him a well-deserved reputation as one of the best guides around. He is married to Rachel, an accomplished angler in her own right, and the proud father of two wonderful girls, Ariela and Talia.
